The Cathedral of Burgos
12,106steps / 8.18km / 4 flights of stairs
Today was the rest day in Burgos and I rested. I got up at 8, had breakfast, and then head out to see the Cathedral of Burgos. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is magnificent. It was constructed on top of the old Romanesque cathedral of 1065AD. It was commissioned by King Ferdinand III in 1220 and took over 500 years to finish (1221-1765). Much of that is because kings and bishops kept adding to it. It is in the Gothic style like several of the other great cathedrals in Europe. Visiting a Cathedral can a little bit laborious, but for the 2nd millennium they were where much of the great art and artisan work can be seen. The amazing cultural history is very enjoyable for me, but I often wonder at what cost for the gospel. When all these cultural ad civic institutions get entangled with the church and the gospel, usually the gospel and our mission of loving other through Jesus Christ our Lord get compromised. Another thing to ponder on this pilgrimage. Here are some pics…

A Model of the Cathedral
A Potrait of Mary Magdalena by Leonardo DiVinci
A Chapel, what interested me was a modern stain glass window
A Depiction of Pentecost from the 1500s
A Church Martyr and the Cruxifixion of Christ in same style- Martyr of San Vicente by Leon Picard, 1524
Chrissy, do you Selma or ATHERTON will let build a chapel to be laid side by side

The Old Romanesque Church underneath
Finally, a pilgrim out front. consented to take a selfie with me. I’ll bet I get to Santiago first (we are beginning to look a lot alike)
