Day 1 Walk

The church bells ran when I started my Camino. At least that is my version, actually when I walked out the hotel door when the church bells rang…it was 8am. The first day stats: 33,977 steps; 24.7 km (15 miles); 56 flights of stairs; 5 hrs 45min. I left Roncesvalles and entered into what felt like a magical scenery. Beautiful tree groves, forests and hills. Atherton made this possible and I am deeply grateful. The Camino feels like it is both a private journey (pilgrimage) and a tour with friends. I started the day passing many and was passed by many at the end of the day. Two college kids came bounding down the hills with a quick “Hola” and “Buen Camino”. I used to do that! Lots of Californians on the Camino. One guy was biking it in 15 days. Others from San Diego and Orange County. A lady who lives in Laguna Beach was a Russian immigrant, now citizen who was so thankful to be an American. She said her company in Russia offered her American wages, but all she wanted was to be an American. Lots of singles on the Camino whose spouses didn’t want to come, both male and female. Got my first political comment from a couple from Singapore, “What do you think of Trump?” I decided to keep walking. The downhills were tough today. Tomorrow a walk to Pamplona. No bull fights this time of year so I won’t have to run for my life. Buen Camino
